Vision care has not kept pace with digital life

Screens and other near-vision tasks now occupy much of the day, while many eye-care workflows were designed for a less digital world. Myopia is appearing earlier, and ageing populations are increasing the number of people living with presbyopia and other visual dysfunctions. Optometrists need tools that can assess and treat those conditions faster, more consistently and with better data than traditional methods allow.

From static eye charts to measurable therapy

WIVI combines immersive 3D technology, gamification and AI to assess and treat binocular visual dysfunctions, the conditions affecting how the eyes focus, align, track movement and work together that conventional acuity tests can miss. During a guided digital session, the system presents interactive stimuli and measures responses across multiple visual functions. Clinicians receive structured results rather than a collection of manual observations, helping them identify the underlying dysfunction, explain it to the patient and define a personalized treatment plan. Therapy then uses the same platform, adapting short, gamified exercises as the patient's performance changes and creating a measurable feedback loop between assessment, training and progress.

From clinical care to visual performance

The same assessment and training infrastructure can extend beyond rehabilitation into visual performance. In sport, WIVI can measure and train capabilities such as reaction time, hand-eye coordination, dynamic focus, object tracking and visual processing, skills that shape how quickly an athlete perceives and responds to the environment. The company has applied the platform in initiatives spanning motorcycle racing and youth basketball, showing how the core product can support new specialist use cases without changing the underlying technology.

Built as clinical software, not ordinary SaaS

WIVI has had to develop as both a software company and a medical-device company. Its system is CE-marked as a Class IIa medical device in Europe, and the company operates a quality-management system certified to ISO 13485. Those requirements shape documentation, risk management, clinical evidence and the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic modules. Expansion therefore depends not only on shipping software, but on demonstrating that each capability is safe, measurable and useful inside professional eye-care workflows.

A founding team spanning technology and vision care

WIVI was founded in Barcelona in 2016 by Eva García Ramos, a telecommunications engineer and its CEO, and Dr. Juan Carlos Ondategui-Parra, a specialist in vision care. Their complementary backgrounds shaped the company from the beginning: a technology platform designed around how clinicians assess and treat visual function, rather than software developed first and adapted to healthcare later.

When we invested, and what the round supported

We led WIVI's €4 million Series A, a mix of equity and debt raised to expand the team, deepen the company's presence in Spain and support international growth. Since then, WIVI has continued building partnerships with optical and ophthalmology groups in Spain and the United States.

Why we backed WIVI

We backed WIVI because it addresses a large but poorly served part of vision care: dysfunctions that can materially affect reading, learning, work and performance, yet often sit between a standard eye examination and specialist therapy. Assessment is still heavily dependent on manual tests and individual practitioner expertise, while treatment can be repetitive, difficult to personalize and highly dependent on patient adherence. WIVI turns both into one structured, measurable workflow.

What makes the opportunity compelling is the combination of clinical depth, regulation, longitudinal data and patient engagement. Each assessment informs therapy; each session generates new data; and the platform becomes more embedded in the professional workflow over time. The same infrastructure can then expand from diagnosis and rehabilitation into prevention and visual performance, including sports. We believe that gives WIVI the foundations to become the operating system for measuring and improving visual function, not simply a digital therapy product.
