Why we invested in WIVI Vision: A gamified approach to improving vision

WIVI Vision co-founders Dr. Juan Carlos Ondategui-Parra and Eva García Ramos

We are pleased to announce our recent investment in WIVI Vision, a fast-growing startup on a mission to assess vision impairments and improve vision care with cutting-edge immersive 3D and AI technologies.

The €4 million Series A round was led by Adara, with participation from Hearstlab, Caixabank DayOne, BBVA Spark, Banco Santander, Avançsa, and others.

The escalating global challenge of vision disorders

Around the world, people now spend most of their time on activities requiring intense near vision. The World Health Organization estimates that by 2030, 40% of the world's population will be nearsighted.

In the US alone, an estimated 128 million adults over 45 are affected by presbyopia, a condition that reduces the ability to focus on nearby objects. Though most people with vision impairment are over 50 years old, a growing number of myopia cases are in children, who are going nearsighted at increasingly younger ages.

As populations continue to age and embrace digital-first lifestyles, the optometry sector must evolve to keep up with rapidly changing vision care needs.

Introducing WIVI Vision: Using advanced technology to improve vision and lives

With more than 25 years of combined experience in the technology and visual care sectors, co-founders Eva García Ramos and Dr. Juan Carlos Ondategui-Parra developed WIVI Vision as a way to help patients recover from visual dysfunctions and help those without vision disorders train and improve their visual skills in a quick and highly personalized experience.

WIVI Vision's solution is based on advanced technologies, including AI, Big Data, and immersive 3D technologies, combined with gamification to adapt to each patient based on their individual needs.

Patients can access fully personalized training programs through WIVI Vision’s catalog of different video games, which not only allows them to have fun but also motivates them to complete their full treatment.

WIVI Vision represents the evolution of traditional visual assessment methods, offering optometrists real-time patient data through a fun and non-invasive experience. The software can also be automatically updated to include the analysis and treatment of more disorders over time, helping optometrists increase the scope of their care.

WIVI Vision has achieved a number of milestones, including:

  • The ability to measure more than 100 parameters in five visual areas with a 100% recovery rate of the treated cases.
  • Completion of an evaluation and design of a training program in 15 minutes or less.
  • Ease of use, affordability, and 100% recovery rate in less than three months to benefit patients of all ages.

The solution has already been approved by the Spanish Ministry of Health as a medical class and the company has established a presence in more than 70 centers specializing in visual health throughout Spain.

WIVI Vision also has expansion agreements with other organizations in the sector, including optometrists and optical centers such as NOG, Claravisión, Cecop, Federópticos, General Óptica, among others, as well as partnerships with other technology companies, public and private hospitals, and leading academic institutions.

With this new financing, the company plans to grow its team to help drive international growth. The company recently signed an agreement with Vision Rehab Technologies, Inc. (VRTI), to become the exclusive distributor of WIVI Vision technology in the United States and plans to launch in more countries in the coming years.

The Adara view: Game-changing vision technology

Integrating innovative technologies in optometry is transforming how optometrists diagnose, manage, and treat eye-related issues. We believe WIVI's cutting-edge 3D immersive and AI-based solution not only empowers optometrists to meet the evolving needs of their patients but can also enhance the overall quality of specialized eye care in an increasingly digital and aging world. By automating data collection, WIVI also allows optometrists to focus more of their time on critical analysis and thinking, paving the way for new possibilities in eye care.
